I should be able to help out unless I somehow manage to cobble together a trackable car by then. Given past performance that looks unlikely...

No trackable car so I'd definitely be up for some flagging. Possibly silly question as I haven't done that before, do I still need to register via motorsportsreg?

Do I remember some one saying track volunteers get a free lunch as well? That's a plus

Sorry I'm mostly in the autocross program and our volunteers don't get anything.

Not to beat the dead horse, but the track volunteers don't get to drive... they just work, and for 7 hours straight... in Fernley.

Most solo volunteers work just one run group opposite the group they race in, which is why they're not compensated. The solo volunteers that do work the whole day are supposed to be the event stewards, who receive free entry as compensation that's actually worth more than a $25 discount and $5 lunch. The problem with solo isn't a lack of compensation for volunteers, it's a lack of volunteers such that the few who contribute are required to work a whole lot more than just the 1/4 day they should be working.

Now, I'm all for compensating the folks that go above and beyond at solo. Without those folks, the program doesn't run. It's just a crappy precedence to have to set, because it doesn't fix the problem of too few volunteers... it just perpetuates the problem by making the few that do volunteer keep working too hard while the rest of the members phone it in working the absolute minimum, perhaps without even realizing there's a need for people to step up their assistance to the program.

I hate that it feels like a slap in the face to the volunteers that go above and beyond the call of duty to work all day at solo events that the race workers get compensated and the solo workers are perpetually told "no". But I sorta get the reasoning... you can't have a policy to pay solo workers for doing a job they're not supposed to have to do. If we ever do get the right number of volunteers, then it might actually screw up the bottom-line of the events having to pay them all. Not to mention managing all the vouchers.

Frankly, the right solution here is to compensate those workers that go beyond the norm unofficially and "under the table". It's not really fair, because it turns volunteers into an inner-circle of folks that get special treatment... but at the same time, that already sorta happens even without the compensation, and it greatly benefits the club to have their help.

...so much for not beating this dead horse.

You have always missed the point of what volunteering really is
