Default Time trials explanation please

How do time trials work? Is it kind of like best lap time not position? So itís not really wheel to wheel racing? You just try to get your best lap? Is it race prepared cars only or do are there classes for street cars? Speed caps for street cars?

Hi Maggie,

We run TA/TE according to national rules at an approved race track, so that's the start. In TE we don't time cars, those groups are experience based. You would be on track with 20 or so other cars. TE groups are gaining experience, getting coaching as required, having good time and maybe looking forward to TA. TE groups are almost all street cars.

TA (time attack or time trials) groups exist to get fast lap times, which is best done when the track is clear ahead of you. There are passing rules, very restrictive (only on straights and with acknowedgement of the one being passed (point by)) to less restrictive (point by in corners and open pass on straights) based on the driver experience. the position you finish is not even considered, just best lap time. TA groups have both street and race cars, separated into two groups by lap time.

Safety requirements range from street car seat belts to cage and harness depending on other modifications. If you AX in street or street tire then the car is usually qualified. Race tires generally put the car in a class that requires extra safety gear.

Event is arranged with 4 20 minute sessions. Doesn't sound like a lot, but when you are fully concentrated 20 min is a long time. Cost per unit track time is better than AX, but investment is higher.

If you're considering, ask me at the next AX event. There are still slots in track event that are right for your car.

Andy really does a great job pointing out the points of interest for Time Trials and Track Events. He neglects to say, however, than it can become addictive, maybe even more so than Solo. The only real bummer, for us in Reno anyway, is that you need to drive 3.5 hours over the hill to Thunderhill, and of course the same back home after, so you need to schedule accordingly.
