Default Hmmm. I didnít think anyone was paying attention.

Mr. Dan Shore (not Dan Simpson of RF Flat Track) has purchased the road course at Reno Fernley and is exploring restoration options. Mr. Shore is currently out of town and representatives of our board will contact him soon to offer advice.

According to reliable sources, Mr. Shore owns a sweet Corvette and really, really wants a local track to run it on. This could be the most expensive ticket to ride ever.

I suggest we all spread the word throughout our contacts in the Reno motorsports community (motorcycles too, like Sierra Sportsbike) and encourage them to have their club officers contact Mr. Shore and offer encouragement in his efforts. Dan Simpson may have contact 411, but I donít know if he cares to share.

These comments are my own and in no way are to be construed as advice from the Reno SCCA Board.

Best

i saw this same news posted on nvracingnews:
http://www.nvracingnews.com/2019/03/...orsports-expo/

Quote:
hen he gave some breaking news regarding the road course that is right beside the Speedway’s oval.

“Dan Shore, a good friend of mine and we’ve been working on this for a long time, did the paper work Friday night for gthe purchase of the pavement track,” Simpson said. “That will be finalized before this month is out and we’re going to allow drifters to run there on April 13th. So that will be the first pavement for over three years.”

Simpson explained how solid he is and mentioned the Shore is a Corvette racer. They are making sure that when road racing returns they layout will allow spectators to see all of the action.

I for one am super excited and would love nothing more than to see the track active. I'd like to help in any way i can, there was a similar discussion thread on the reno cars & coffee facebook page that eventually fizzled out.

If this is for real... someone needs to tell Mr. Shore two things if he wants to get the track up and running quickly and have instant income from SCCA events:

1) He needs to pave a giant flat pad for autocross and drift.

2) He should connect the end of Sunset straight to the fishbowl and then repave just the outer perimeter of the track. He can leave all that inner pavement and let it rot.

Fix the bumps down the main straight, repave the horsepower course (that's $2.5 million right there) and put in some water and rest rooms, too.

or better yet, sweep the sand off it, open the gates and let us drive! We can complain about conditions and bumps later.

That's the attitude, it's going to take a lot of effort, $$ and some time to make the track viable again.

My fear is despite the growth in and around the area, most of the hoons would still rather street race than pay to use a purpose built safe facility.

the people who would rather street race than pay to be on the track, are exactly the kind of irresponsible people i wouldn't want to be on track with anyway.

Default RFR Screen shots

I tried to compress screen shots of RFR from Google Earth satellite views, without luck.

For excellent views of the condition of the road course, load Google Earth and search Reno Fernley Raceway.

It will be casual to the most obvious observer that much restoration needs to be done, but Roger Diez, motorsports writer for the Nevada Appeal and friend of Dan Simpson (Roger’s source and owner of the flat track) tells me Dan Shore, new owner of the road course, is enthusiastic about reopening the track, beginning with the High Horsepower segment and is anticipating a 2020/21 opening.

I trust Club members who may have their collective ears closer to the ground, will keep everyone else posted on developments.

Unfortunately, the track was already breaking cars 5 years ago before it closed. I can only imaging how terrible it is now.

I guess you could open it immediately for trophy truck racing though! Crap... that'd be pretty cool actually.

Default For newer members...

...who never had the pleasure of lapping the RFR Roadcourse, before it fell into disrepair and closed:

https://youtu.be/D0Es6kwuOos

I put in nearly 200 miles on the course on my Ď93 CB750 Nighthawk, during a cloudless day when another gentleman had rented the course for his private use. My instructor knew somebody who knew somebody and my cost was $150.

Also gave my instructor $5 for gas when he had to rescue me on the uphill segment. Forgot I had put the gas valve on reserve and was getting significantly less than my typical 55 mpg.

Still no updates on the course but remaining cautiously optimistic.

Anyone have news?
