Default Thoughts for next year's trials?

Dave Deborde would like to start planning on what we want to do next year for the track program; we'd like to hear from everyone what they think. Thunderhill is very popular and if we want dates we need to schedule as soon as we can, if that's what we want to do.

Please let us know your thoughts.

No question, Thunderhill seems to deliver each time. As long as we're keeping our heads above water with costs, it's a great opportunity for us.
I would like to see one or more extra T-hill East day, though.

I think Thunderhill is the only viable option within a reasonable commute.

What was the feedback on Sunday's vs. Saturday's, what's preferred, did we get higher attendance?

The Sunday only events are killing me... home at 12:30a.m. and have to be back to work by 7:30 the next day.

I think everyone prefers Saturdays, but it really depends on what days are open and available at THill.

I'd have to echo Cory's comment - the Sunday events are really problematic with my work schedule as well and also tend to prevent me from trailering the race car down there (if it was running that is) due to the added time needed.

Default 2018 Track Schedule

1Have been working with Thunderhill to get four Saturdays on the 2 mile West course as requested. The intent is to get four Saturdays spread out between the end of March and the end of October.

Because several participants, drivers and workers also do SFR races we need to schedule around their schedule and also around the Reno Air Races and SCCA Runoffs. As of now SFR does not have a complete schedule and Thunderhill is 'selling out' quickly on the West Course.

After several 'back and forth' with TH we have three dates locked in but we are still working on the fourth date. Here is where we are so far:

1. March, April, May - no Saturday dates available that are not in conflict with SFR

2. June 9 PDX/Time Trial--TH West

3. August 18 PDX/Time Trial --TH West

4 September 22 PDX/Time Trial--TH West

We might want to look at a Saturday in February or a Sunday in April or May and Shannon, TH General Manager is looking at other dates that another group may be willing to vacate for us. We can also look at doing Saturday April 7 which is open on the West Course but SFR will be racing on the East Course that weekend also. "Tough Decision"

Last edited by Dave Deborde; 11-04-2017 at 02:58 PM. Reason: Posted the wrong date in June. We have Saturday June 9 locked in, not Friday June 29. Sorry for the error!

Dave, do you mean Saturday, June 30th; or Friday, June 29th?

Any date in February would be teasing the weather gods too much, I think; much rather risk it for April 7th.

I'd shoot for a Sunday in late April or early May, if I recall correctly the first event this season was probably one of the best attended.

Is Sonoma out of the question? Itís not much farther of a drive and would be a great change from T-Hill.

Very, very, very - did I mention very? - expensive rental prices there. We would need around 100 cars to come near to breaking even.

"if you build it, they will come"

My opinion -- If events were actively promoted throughout social media etc, 100 cars wouldn't be too hard to do.
Understandably though the risk vs. reward is a bit scary for a large rental fee.

The other thing to keep in mind is that there are likely issues with instructing at Sonoma - I haven't looked at this very recently but IIRC the racing school there had an exclusive arrangement with the track to provide instruction, so we may not be able to run PDX Green, and may not be able to have instructors in the car for PDX Blue either.

Timo, they will be driver observers not instructors ;-)

SFR can not get a race date.at Sonoma so I would say it would be impossible for us to get any weekend date. SCCA took the only day allocated for SCCA for the 2018 so SFR is left out in the cold. Not sure why but SCCA doesn't have a good relationship with them.

Don, even 100 entries at $400 each would not cover one day at Sonoma and they will not give SCCA a date anyway.

Don, the Runoffs are at Sonoma in 2018 and I am fully committed to being an official there. April 7 & 8 is the Majors leading up to the Runoffs and both Carol & I will be doing the Majors. This is not an option for us.

Still trying for a date at TH West for a Saturday or Sunday in late February or March, April or early May. So far nothing is available except possibly Easter Sunday (which I am not willing to do). Late April or early May would be great but don't know if any other group is willing to give up one of the dates!
Will continue looking!

Sonoma is the only area track I've never been to, so I'd go even if it was pricey... but I expect I'm not in the majority there.

Is Laguna Seca as expensive as Sonoma? I'd load up the Miata and trailer down to a Seca event for sure.

What about going south? Is Buttonwillow too far away? It's certainly too far for me, now that I'm in Portland... but we used to get tons of people willing to drive to Hawthorne once a year...

Just got back from Buttonwillow; fun and complicated track. It is indeed a long drive down though. If event entry fees are lower, competitors who tow will make up for it in diesel fuel costs...!

Don, SFR is doing a Majors on the East Course on April 7-8. I will be officiating at that event and will not be available for a PDX/Time Trial.

Default Sonoma Race Date For SFR

So, SFR did get their usual Fourth of July weekend at Sonoma. They have a Regional/Majors at Sonoma June 29-July 1, 2018. Because the Runoffs will be held at Sonoma this year the event will be packed with drivers trying to get seat time at Sonoma and qualify for the Runoffs. Should be a massive event!

Sure wish we could get a day at Sonoma for a PDX/Time Trial. I expect many racers would sign up if we had a special 'Race Prepared group. Maybe a weekday??
