Default New To TT

New to the Time Trial world, and hoping to enter all four Time Trial events in 2018. What is the process for participating in these events?

In a nutshell;
1) car requirements and classification?
2) car safety requirements?
3) personal safety requirements?
4) driver requirements?

Done a lot of autocrossing for the last few years, and also some track days at Thunderhill and Laguna. Car is a 2000 Mazda Miata.

Thanks very much.

There are links above under the "Cars & Rules" menu:
National SCCA TT regulations: https://www.scca.com/pages/time-trials
2017 Regional Supplemental Regulations (2018 aren't written yet): http://www.renoscca.org/documents/Tr...TT%20Supps.pdf
Trials Car Classifications: http://www.renoscca.org/ttclass/

That should cover the basics of what TT is, what sort of safety gear is needed, and what class your car will be in.

If you've autocrossed and run some PDX/HPDE type events, you're probably already all set for Club Trials!

Yes, what Scott says. For TT (or what we call "Time Trials" and includes both the old SCCA Track Trial cars and Club Trials cars) you self-class your car just like autocrossing using the Reno Region's Classification template. I'm guessing your car would be either Club Trial C or maybe D depending on weight and mods.

Any questions just post them here and we'll be happy to help you out.

Not sure i'm understanding the licensing (Time Trial Novice Permit?) and log book process. How does one obtain those prior to showing up at the first event. I just don't want to arrive at the event, only to find I've not completed some process and can't run.

You can get a log book at registration at the event, I believe they're still $5.00. You should also download our Tech Sheet (available in our Documents section) and fill that out before presenting your car at tech, it will make the tech inspection much quicker. As to licensing you need to show the Chief Steward that you've had enough experience - autocrossing or track days - to run on track with other cars. There is no physical, put in your wallet, license. He may ask you to do a session of PDX first before signing you off for Club Trials, or he may not. Either way you can contact him prior to getting to Thill, or when you arrive the morning of the event.

Glad to have you join us, and as a Miata guy myself I know you will have a ball.

As you want to compete in all 4 events consider coming (with car) to the pre-season Tech Event at Summit Racing, we can set you up with the log book and an annual tech, so when you arrive for your events you just bring the log book and your helmet to tech each time.

We don't have a date yet, last year it was April 1, but likely needs to be earlier next year given the March event.

He'd have to make a weekend of it, coming from California.

Ah, I didn't look at the Avatar location, my bad! That said we can do an Annual Tech and log book at the first event.

What is the actual format of the event? Is each driver given a specific number of laps for their timed run? Staggered cars on track?

Where is Summit Racing? I'm less than 2 hours from Reno. Will the annual tech date be posted somewhere?

The day is broken into sessions for TT and PDX, the TT format is two run groups (split by times) of 25 minute sessions. So there's a group of cars on track at one time. Passing is via point by and everyone's pretty good at acknowledging and letting faster cars pass. The best timed lap of the first session (practice/qualifying) sets your grid spot for the 'race', albeit you are only really racing against the clock.

Summit Racing store is on Glendale Ave. in Sparks, just off I80. Yes, we'll post the date when we have it lined out. But don't worry too much we can do it at the first event too.

I classified my car, and it came out as a TT-D or CT-D. How do I know which of these two classes to run? In reviewing the results from 2017, I see cars in both classes.

Thanks for your help, guys. I'm really looking forward to this new type of event for me.

If your car is lightly prepped, more of a street car than race car, CT-D would be the way to go. The TT cars usually are full caged, trailer-ed to the event rides.

What are the tire rules, both size and compound?

How are transponders made available?

Thanks!

Tire choice is pretty much open to your preference, can run street or slicks.

Transponders can be rented for the day at $25 at time of registration. We can provide a holder that you zip tie or wire in a good spot to get a signal to the asphalt (e.g. front or rear bumper).

Regarding transponders...

If I purchase one of the new version AiM transponders with a subscription, instead of renting, will that be compatible for use at the time trial events?

If I remember correctly the AIM transmits to your dash pod only doesn't it? We use the tracks closed system which is compatible with My Laps (AMB) transponders, so I don't think the AIM will work for official times, but for your own use it would.

I'm sorry. I got two brands mixed up. I meant to say the new AMB transponders, that require a subscription. They are what is replacing the 260.

The My Laps ones work fine - that's what I use.
