Unhappy Stead Airport gone

If you were at the December meeting you already know about our losing the Stead Airport as a solo site; if not, well, now you do. The airport is no longer allowing any automotive events on the pad we use. We will try to meet with the management of the airport and see if we can change their minds, but as it stands now we won't be using Stead this coming season, or in the foreseeable future.

So, that of course puts us in the position of once again searching for alternate sites, and rest assured we will be looking at all possibilities. The Public Safety Training area is still on board, and perhaps the Hard Rock Hotel at Tahoe. The Livestock Events Center might be possible as it is now under new management, but will be undergoing construction and paving this spring and summer. If you know of any potential sites please let us know.

Don

Minden-Tahoe Airport has a closed runway and taxiway on the NE side of the airport with a access road going around the north end and in on the east side.

Angry Say it isn't so...

Another nail in the Reno SCCA coffin of declining attendance and millennials, et al losing interest in cars and driving .

If there is an alternate venue out there, it must be well hidden since many eyeballs have spent hours scouring Google Earth in a vain effort to locate it...

While Don will be making another effort to change management minds at Stead, perhaps a letter-writing campaign by members and Street Survival grads would be helpful? An address and individual to target.

Also, an open letter to the editor of RGJ, announcing this sad turn of events. Does shame work?

And Don, other than simply disallowing our use, what specific reasons did Stead provide in their decision.

And at the risk of insulting your intelligence Don, maybe we gotta take this "upstairs".

Let me know how I can be of assistance.

As a retired guy with time on my hands, I can be annoying. Ask my wife.

Sad to see what may develop to be the end of an era for local enthusiasts...

Trying hard to remain optimistic...

We are working all angles, and the hunt is on for new venues.

Might consider approaching Boreal ski resort. They paved their parking lot this summer. And there are no homes nearby, so sound should not be an issue. Plus it is cool in the summer

Tesla added a giant parking lot to their battery factory over the summer, maybe they would be willing to let us borrow a portion of it every once in a while.

Wow, that is a big lot. You and your dad may need to be part of the team to meet with Tesla bringing the roadster of course.

One of my employees worked out there for a while, he says it's like a military base in that no one who isn't an employee of Tesla or Panasonic, a contractor, or a delivery person can get on the grounds. So the chances of them letting a bunch of strangers use their parking lot is remote at best.

What about silver springs airport? Not sure what their pad looks like. Or, what about expanding to club racing, that might spark some more interest in Reno region. SF region has stuff going all the time. Don't let Reno die, I just got my car right....

Unhappy We are not alone...

Just spent some time on the Sacramento SCCA site and they have lost their Mather Field venue.

All their 2019 Autocross events have been scheduled for Thunderhill:

http://www.sfrscca-sacramento.org/2019%20SCHEDULE.htm

...although a note on the site says Mather may be available in August or September and they will adapt.

Reliable sources (I can only copy paste once) indicate several other Autocross sites, once available to the SF region are also gone and Alemeda is not a lock either.

Not encouraging...

Don't get your hopes up too high but I've talked to the management of the Livestock Events Center about using their parking lot and they are looking into it. Don't know pricing or anything yet, but I'll keep everyone informed.

Thunderhill has a few recently paved large squares of tarmac for drift practice and (I assume) autocross use. Located in between the East and West road courses.

I think they've done the "if you build it" part. We just need to show up. Too bad it's so far away from everywhere.

Having not been there myself, I was just looking at maps, has anyone looked into the Top gun race track in Fallon, looks like there is enough room if you can combine the track with the staging areas. The only drawback I see is the commute and the dirt road getting into the site not good on tires,
