Is it too early to ask what everyone is planning for next season? What class, what tires, what car??
Kevin M

FP. V710s. AWD Subaru, no turbo. Should weigh <2500 pounds dry.

I am thinking about moving over to STR. I just got new dunlop star specs, should be a huge improvement over the all season i ran this year.

yeah, those A6s are cheap. I looked into 16's once and I feel I just don't have enough HP to turn them . Really though 16's are a dieing breed. Not too many tires out there for them any more + would have to be a totally custom wheel to get any wider than what I already have 9". 17's are crazy big, but you get all the choices in the world. I believe that 15's on 225 is the best compromise at the moment.

After seeing how well Kevin did in H Stock, and the new PAX numbers for this year, I'm thinking maybe a decent H Stock car and some good driving might again be the ticket. I've got the decent H Stock car - Civic Si - (the good driving part might be a problem) but I'd need some tires. What did you run this year Kevin, RE-11s?
Kevin M
11-13-2010, 12:52 PM
We were on clearance RE-01Rs from 2009 for the first 5 events, then got fresh Dunlops. I'd go with the StarSpecs given a choice, in the widest size you can cram on the tires. What size are your stock wheels?

16x6.5? If so, you can probably fit 225/50s

Got to see how many drivers our household will have competing next year. Adam might get a co-drive with someone, if that's the case Sheri and I will probably go to STR in the Miata; if Adam doesn't co-drive it will be he and Sheri in the Miata in STR and I'll run the Honda in H Stock with the widest rubber I can squeeze on it.
tom1977
11-14-2010, 12:36 PM
I was originally going to run FP, but noticed I would have been the only one. Therefore, I was going to run the SU class...IF I dont modify out of FP over the winter, I may have to choose FP. I get to compete with van over in SU though....hmmm.......decisions, decisions...
Kevin M
11-14-2010, 01:10 PM
If you plan to run street tires, you need to stay in SU to get the street tire factor.
tom1977
11-14-2010, 02:10 PM
Yup, sure do^^^^I may want to run FP, but I have plans that if completed, will force me to stay in SU as originally planned. I know that I can still run street tires in FP, but I get no modifier.
..I'm thinking maybe a decent H Stock car and some good driving might again be the ticket. . .I was thinking the same thing.
Isn't there a Subaru model still left in HS?
Kevin M
11-14-2010, 04:14 PM
Yes, the 1.8 and 2.2 liter Imprezas, plus some similar Legacies. But there's no way I'd drive a Subaru in stock trim without it being an STi.

Currently building my engine again with everything fully balanced by B and B balanceing, hope to run up to 8000 RPM next year so that I can do less shifting around autocross. Dialing boost down to around 15psi and runing stock ignition for track events to keep reliability higher. Installing a fan on my oil cooler, finishing a cold air box, and some permenant radiator shroud panels to ward off overheating at the track.

Naw. The more Cody monkeys around with the car, the more it's broken and slower.
Any further mods are either cost prohibitive (diffs, brakes, 2.5L motor, P&P&C headers) or would take away from the streetability (stiffer suspension, catless exhaust). My car is primarily my daily driver and simply doubles as an autocross car. :)

I will probably only be out a couple of times next year. I am hoping the car will be up for 1 or 2 PDX events.

Hi Guys, what class does a stock '04 Mazdaspeed Miata fit in? I was planning on dumping the factory 17's for some lighter and stronger 15's.
I have heard the Mazdaspeed wheels are not very strong!
miataman
11-17-2010, 02:42 PM
I would bet that your stock wheels are plenty strong for anything but huge potholes. Now if they fit the tire you want, is another story. To keep in stock class you will have to run the origoinal wheels. I believe that changing the size of your wheels puts you into Street Prepared. Just run Novice right out of the gate, my suggestion.

There are a couple of classes you would fit in, depending on the mods to the car - like wheel size. MiataMan is right, just come out and run Novice class for a few events and get the feel for which class you want to end up in.

The Racing Hart wheels on your car are fine...If you don run novice you wil be in CS with stock wheels. We have a pretty good Miata contingent with in our group. The main thing is....Have fun!!

I still want to, but my wallet doesn't seem to agree. Looks like it's not going to be possible, unless I hit the lottery or something. It comes down to new teeth for Adam, or the supercharger, and well, it's hard to chew with a supercharger. Besides, you were fast enough this year, can't imagine trying to catch you after you've rebuilt your mill yet again, but if Publisher's Clearing House knocks on my door with the big check, I'll give it a try.

Debated about buying wider wheels and tires, but in the end decided on replacing the Mazda. This coming season I'll be competing in B Stock. The Mazda is still in the family. My daughter will be driving it, but probably not autocrossing.

I knew you would be lurking somewhere on the Forum. I haven't got it yet, but it should be delivered late next week. I found it on Craigslist in Phoenix. To provide a clue, the 18" rims are 8" wide in the front and 9" wide in the back. Then again all you need to do is to look to the left.

Congratulations on the new car; always hate to see someone leave the Miata world and go to the dark side, but that's a nice ride.

I'm very curious to see how the surface at Stead holds up during the Street Survival/Solo School days. If it has improved from last year, that could cause a seachange for a bunch of people, and tire choices could come back into play. I know Kevin is committing to R-Comps this year, could we see some Production and Modified cars return?
Kevin M
01-15-2011, 01:04 PM
You're not the only one Don. I'm thinking I'll probably wait until May to run the R comps at Stead just due to the lower temperatures. I think as long as we continue with the sweepers, I'll be fine on race tires.

I was originally going to run STR, but with my currently tight budget I might just go back down to C stock. with the new class consolidation that looks to be going into effect, should still be some competition to run against (and that was my main reason to move to STR). If I was to run in STR it would be in a mostly C stock car.
