View Full Version : Adopt a Cone

Cones are part of the dark underbelly of our community. Drivers often pretend they don't exist. Society has no respect for the poor little things. They are warehoused in dark uncomfortable quarters, their education is overlooked, and they often suffer from neglect at best or extreme physical abuse at worst.
Well, on Saturday the Reno SCCA began its Adopt-a-Cone program. Extra cones at Station 5 had to be repeatedly replenished as car after car entered the box, claimed its cones, and took them away from all this. Extra kudos to those who adopted more than one. Going home with a few siblings should make the transition from group living to a family much easier for the little orange guys.
Those of you who can't take on new family members can still help. Your small monthly donation can buy medical care for your cone. And you can visit your cone at every race -- part of each donation goes toward the purchase of an individual sticky blue name tag identifying the cone as yours.
So don't be shy. Adopt a whole family. The faster we can get them all off the course the more fun we'll have. Donuts anyone?

A new event: try to get as many cones stuck under our cars as possible, the one who is dragging the most through the finish line wins.

Wanna bet? Last year at Mather (Shriners event) I had so many cones under the kart that I beached it. The cones literally picked me up off the ground so that my rear tires were spinning free in the air. I think they counted like 13 cones under the kart....:p

And how many cones will it take to get my rally car-based wagon beached? ;)

So the next game of chance shall be who hits the most cones for a single event and the other prize can be for the best destruction of a single cone during a single run.
BP Cobras are good at this. I saw a BP cobra chop the top half of the cone off sending it flying a good 15 feet in the air. I don't recall if the base stayed in the box or not.

You should see cones get hit at a Solo 1 event... Greg Benson hit one at 150mph in his Mustang a few years back. The cone survived, but the bumper... not so much. I've done the same at Hawthorne (though that was at 95-100, not 150) and it took the bumper half off the car.
I hit a landing light at Hawthorne in the old black BP car. Someday I might fix the broken fiberglass. But those lights sure do fly when you hit them. Somebody found it and put it in the back of my truck for a trophy.

Ha! I've got one of those too.
In fact, I think we hit 4 or 5 of them on average each year. :( Who hasn't picked up a light out there?

If I donate a cone maybe by flinging it out of my car while on course do I get a 2 second credit or a penalty for cone abandonment

I am so glad it is now referred to as Adopting a Cone. I was worried all this time I had been Kidnapping the cones.
As the person who just temporarily footed the bill on our 100 new cones of which some were already abused and others had far worse things done to them, perhaps we should impose an "adoption fee". :)

yep. we should award "cone king' and 'cone queen' honors for every race day. the 'winners' can be assessed a fine of $1 per cone downed. we can keep aside two cones as perpetual 'trophies' and put a nice sticky blue 'plaque' with the name of the winner, the date of the race and the cone count.
