Didn't have much useful footage from saturday, my camera battery was dead. Here is my fastest run from sunday, wish I had another run to clean it up a bit. It's a bit dark due to the cloud cover and rain about 10 mins after this run.

Videos from the first weekend at RFR. I didn't do well, maybe a tire modifier for 400+ tread wear would have helped me. lol

Thanks for being a good sport and posting them up!

Chasing Subaru...

Chief instructor critique mode on for both you and Van.

I can't see Van as well, so he won't get as much attention. :)

In general, you are both doing very well and have pretty good lines. I am just offering encouragement on places to work on.

Tim, I would suggest you work on eliminating shuffle steering everywhere!!! It will smooth out your steering inputs and corrections. Might have to change your seating position. Your arms look a little straight.

Also work on turning your head the direction you want to go earlier. You do it great in 9a!!! And get a little more rumble strip in a lot of places.

Van, You are hugging 22, let the car track out.

I think you both cheated the turn in a bit on 23.

Tim, turns 1, 1a,1b relax and get your eyes to the turn 2 worker station. You appear to be turning a second time especially 1a and 1b to catch the "right amount" of each rumble strip rather than having a smooth flow that takes you there.

Turn 2, I like your line but you then miss the apex at 3. Move the downshift before 2 to after and/or add a brake tap between them. Adding a little throttle as you track out of 2 will force you to do something. :)

T4 Not sure, but it sounds like you only lift. Add a tap of brake at turn in and get back on the throttle earlier. Should help you catch more rumble strip. Also allows you to power out of 3 more!

Van doesn't look like he is braking either but makes more rumble.

T5 Van, turning too much! No reason to be mid track after this turn 1/2-1 car width off left side dirt is fine.

Tim, Turn a little harder at the bottom so you can straighten the wheel and add throttle pre apex.

8A Van, hug the left side all the way to turn in for 9A.

I don't think either of you tap the brakes before 9a which is why you don't make the apex. It is tighter than 8a and you have been going downhill... Remember, Gas, Brake, Turn... Repeat!!!

19 Tim, you are a bit early. Did you tap the brakes? being a little later at turn in would allow you to accelerate through a later apex.

20 Was that an apex? :)

Again, you are both doing great, keep up the good work.

Chasing S2000.

Mostly the same critique but better in 1,1A,1B...

Sunday.

Again, in general, very good.

More slalom of 9a,10,10a will set you up better for 11 so you can get on the gas earlier.

14 is tighter than 13. tap, turn, and track all the way out...

15 cheated turn in and probably too late of a turn in.

Turn 2, I like your line but you then miss the apex at 3. Move the downshift before 2 to after and/or add a brake tap between them.

I see exactly what you mean, I moved the down shift later on sunday and it was working better.

More slalom of 9a,10,10a will set you up better for 11 so you can get on the gas earlier.

I had a bit of trouble setting up for that section correctly, I think I am carrying to much speed into it.

14 is tighter than 13. tap, turn, and track all the way out...

I had a real hard time with this section all day long, 13 is alot slower and longer than it looks.

Thanks for the pointers Dean.

Hey Tim, the videos look good. Thanks to you and Tom for the advice on Sunday. I found my right side calipers were hanging up when I got home. Based on watching your lines Sunday and when I was following Van on Saturday I can certainly use a lot more training and track time.
Thank you

They camera was just under $300 with a 8 gig memory card. It came with a few different mounts including the suction cup that I was using for most of my solo videos. I bought a roll bar mount for around 30-40 and that is what I used for the track videos. I am very pleased with the camera and quality, finding software that supports 1080p or 60fps is a bit tough or a bit expensive though.

Dean
11-04-2010, 10:08 PM
If you want to go cheap, almost any digital camera made in the past 5 years will shoot 640x480 30fps video and has a nice standard 1/4"x20 mount hole.

I fabbed up a "Lowes" aluminum mount and 2 eBay gimbles for under $25 a few years back for the STI and use 2 cameras one forward and one back facing.

Wow Tim, you've gotten very, very smooth in the short time you've been racing with us. You do a great job of keeping your eyes down the course and you set up your lines nicely, no fighting the car to get through the tight left and the hairpins. The main critique I'd give is that you should learn to stop shuffle steering, but after the first 1/3 of the course you were doing it a lot less. Other than that, just take that smoothness and start pushing the car a little harder- it was only the last 2 elements where I could hear the tires starting to sing.

You're doing great!

Timothy5509

Thanks for the comments. Derek, it is a very helpful tool, if you look further back in this thread you can see the help I have got. I didn't realize I shuffle steered that much until someone commented about my PDX video. this last weekend with the first corner be the the timing lights being so sharp, it takes me a little bit to get my hands back where I want them.

Timothy5509
05-07-2011, 11:54 PM
I would not say the track days didn't help, but it is a lot different driving style. Track seems quite a bit smoother than auto-x, a little more time to make sure you are on the right line. Auto-x is very fast pace quick inputs, and a little mistake cost a significant amount of time. Not that the same mistake would cost you less on the track, but a tenth of a second is a lot bigger on a 50 second lap than a 3 minute lap. But I have yet to be timed on track, doing club trials next event.

I've never been able to see any benefit from track days to solo either, although to me the reverse - solo experience benefitting track - is there.

I have it mounted on my roll bar on the cross brace. I really enjoy the camera angle, shows my movements and still shows outside the car too. Probably the closest to a 2 camera setup as I can get with just the one.

I had Tom co driving with me over the weekend. Saturday morning was just a bunch of sliding around and then with all the issues right after the first run group, I have no clue how I did or what was my fastest run.

K-dogg and MattR had an awesome exchange along those lines Saturday afternoon. Kev made a nifty turn to somehow dodge a cone coming on to the back taxiway, and Matt jumped up and yelled with his arms in the air in triumph. Kev looked at him funny... then intentionally tipped over Matt's farthest cone on his next run.

They were not corded, but fairly close. And there isn't any maintenance throttle, just full throttle, I don't lift until the braking area for turn 2.

They were not corded, but fairly close. And there isn't any maintenance throttle, just full throttle, I don't lift until the braking area for turn 2.Watched it again slower/bigger. Can't tell for sure, better sound might help, but it looks like you were late, did not make the rumble strip in 1, turned too hard for it and had to turn too early/hard to make 1A which means you turned in when the car was light over the bump. You also appear to look down and right at the apex of 1A right before you get there rather than up the track to 2/3 which contributes to off-line and abrupt turn in.

Hope I am not being too critical. I like to analyze things and figure out why... I appreciate you posting the video.

That said... back to PDX B with you. ;)

Vision, Vision, Vision...

Timothy5509
11-06-2011, 10:37 AM
I came to a similar conclusion of what caused my spin. I made my turn into 1B before my car completely settled from the bump, most likely because I turned into 1A to late. As for the sound I don't know how to get it better in the current location I mount it.

I do appreciate everyone's comments, as it helps me to improve my driving. And sometimes you need someone to be very critical to point out all the little things.
