I don't expect to have my car tuned before this event so I won't be participating in the Solo or Trials events, but I may be interested in coming out to do the instructor school on Saturday.

Any details about how this is going to work, what sort of format the school will be, whether or not I need a car to participate, etc?

Do I need my Track Trials license? SCCA screwed up my renewal and I've yet to receive my corrected membership card.

Yes, there will be a PDX instructor school Saturday the 11th. The day before the PDX/CT/TT event on Sunday the 12th!!!

Sorry for the delay getting the information out. Until the board meeting last night, it was unclear if we could go through with it.

I will be sending out something to all past instructors, TT and CT drivers hopefully tomorrow (Friday) as well as to some other instructor types. You do not have to be the fastest, "bestest" driver to be a good coach/instructor. It is more about communication and observation than driving in many respects.

I will need to know if you also plan on participating in the Solo event that day and in which run group so we can plan around that.

You do not really need a trackable car as you will be role playing in a "student" car. It would not hurt to bring one though as you never know what might come up.

TT license is not a requirement!!!

You will need a helmet and communication device if you have one.

If you are interested, feel free to post here or send me a PM and I will make sure you get the information.

Thanks all. More to follow.

I'm willing to participate, but I'll pretty much only be available during 3rd run group.

Dean, I'm going to try to make it out there. I won't have a car, and I won't have an intercom (though my helmet is wired for an IMSA/NASCAR radio hookup). I wasn't planning on autocrossing, so I should be able to participate morning, afternoon, or both.

Scott, it will be great if you can help me out. But I think you're too tall and won't fit in my little car.

I drove PatR's S2000 a while back at an autocross... it was a tight fit, but I managed (with only some of my helmet above the windshield  ). I gotta figure I should be able to passably cram into the passenger seat.

Update:

First, I have more confirmed attendees from Montana than I do from our local region. :( Where are all of our local instructors and instructor candidates?

Even if you have instructed before, you are encouraged to attend even if you already have a SCCA instructor license. We want all instructors to be familiar with the program.

The PDX program cannot survive without instructors and the more we have the less load on everyone.

Just to clarify: There are going to be two separate training sessions on Saturday. You can attend either one or stick around and stay for both. ;) One starting at 8:00 and one at 1:00. (Plan on arriving at least 15-30 minutes early to get registered and settled.

Please confirm if you plan to attend and which session(s) ASAP.

Thanks again, and looking forward to seeing everyone Saturday, and hope everyone will come back Sunday and instruct if they can to try out their new skills.

If you are not sure if you are qualified, or what all is involved, feel free to contact me.

Want To Be A PDX Instructor?

We want you! The more instructors we have the easier it is for everyone!

We are holding our first PDX instructor training sessions at RFR on Saturday July 11th!

Morning and afternoon sessions will be available to allow you to participate in the Solo event or to prepare/test for the PDX/CT/TT on the 12th. Our PDX Instructor Training Program is in its infancy but promises to be rewarding for students and instructors alike. PDX Instructors will be receive discounts at Reno Region Time Trials events (on a first come first served basis) and perhaps more importantly, will have the satisfaction of helping another driver enjoy track events while helping sustain our track program.. There is more to instructing than meets the eye, if you think you have what it takes read on..
This is a challenging, multi-modal program that includes classroom and self-study curriculum, written and verbal exams, video "you make the call" exercises, on-track Instructor / Student "role plays" and skills proficiency assessments. To our knowledge, this program is the most comprehensive training of its type. It won't be for everyone, but if you have the desire, commitment, communication and car control skills it takes, then let's talk.
There is no charge for the classroom session. Graduating Instructors are strongly encouraged to purchase, or have access to an in-car communicator.
Those successfully completing all phases of the program will earn a Course Certificate, a discount coupon good at any Reno Region SCCA Solo or Time Trials event and the right to instruct at upcoming SCCA PDX track day events nationally, with no charge for personal track time. Your greatest reward will be when your Student shakes your hand and says "thanks, I had a great time, you really helped me!"

If you have instructed before, but are not licensed, we encourage you to attend to qualify for your license and to share your experience and help our new instructors learn. If interested, contact Dean Benz at Dean@BenzFamily.US(775) 786-5224 and provide:

Name, email and phone numbers
Racing or performance driving background
Personal or professional experience where you have trained others
If not SCCA competition licensed or graduate of another car club Instructor training program, you will also need to provide references and contact info for at least two individuals, preferably SCCA members, who can vouch for your competency on track
