does anyone have a 5lb fire system for my little formula car i am going to run a hill climb next month and there isnt any place to put a reg. extinguiser unless i mount it on my helmet or some other place really uncumfortable thanks Scott
They want fire suppression in an open car?
Any system is still going to have a 5lb bottle you need to put somewhere...
Under your knees?
How about a pair of 2.5lb extinguishers on the sides of the tub for "turbo boost"?

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS or fire systems are mandatory in
all cars. They must be mounted using a metal bracket, be within easy reach of thedriver or a safety official, and must be a minimum 5BC rating. They
must be professionally tested and tagged within 2 years of the event.
it has a place to mount a bottle under the seat is is a race car after all -just a tiny one

The difference is that the 5lb system bottle doesn't have to be immediately accessible to the driver.

Stupid way to write a rule but, Kevin's correct, a 2.5 lb is usually a handheld, (2.0lbs min.,SCCA) and a 5 lb is min for a permanenty mounted system with electric or cable actuation.
Most 5 lb. bottles are about 4.5 inches in diameter and 16 inches long including the actuator. Typical formula car mounting is under the front edge of the seat (with the gauge visible for us tech guys) or behind the fuel cell. On some of the older cars, like my FF the bottle is mounted on a frame member between your legs as long as it doesn't interfer with getting out of the car.
A 5 lb. system runs $320 min. and up. Summit has them in stock. I don't know if the stock's in Reno.
If you get a cable actuator, get a pull one rather than a push one, it's safer when working on the car if you forget to put in the safety pin.

Just remember to pull the "pin" whenever you are running.
I had a multiple Baja 1000 veteran tell me that he never starts the car without pulling the pin. Even when backing it off of the trailer. Maybe a little excessive
it only takes one time though...

Good point, Fred.
A lot of guys use the Remove Before Flight red streamers on the pin.

It looks like I won’t need one. After driving the 440 on Saturday and feeling like I was in a washing machine that was being fired out of a cannon. then driving the BMW on the road course Sunday, sanity (or at least what I imagine sanity would be) will prevail. the fine German touring car will be making the trip to Hoopa
