Hello all,

I need serious help . My daughter got her learner's permit Friday and I got a hell of a shock. In the dark ages when I went to high school they gave you driver's ed and scared you with gory accident footage. Then you had driving simulators and actual driving experience (Santa Monica Beach parking lot where your friends could all watch and laugh at you in my case). Then they taught you to use a manual shift and the last day you got to get on the freeway and sit in traffic with thousands of other people. Not here.

I discovered that all they do here is give them enough lecture to pass this tiny booklet of a test and that the actual driving is then supposed to be taught by the only people in the world the kids don't listen to. WTF? So is there is a GOOD school here where I can send Shelley to get more than the "rules of the road" as Dean puts it? She will do Street Survival but I want her to get some professional experience and a bit of confidence before then (and still be on speaking terms with her).

Anyone know which is the best? Thanks for whatever info you can give me.

I went through the same type of training you did, but I think driving with my step dad was the most valuable part of the equation. You sure driving around with her pops wouldn't be the way to go?

I did get a lot out of the semester long class I took in HS too though. Not so much from watching Red Asphalt, but the teacher communicated a lot of information regarding driving laws that made passing the written part of the DMV test a snap.

Her father is the world's worst driver. Ever. He commutes while shaving, drinking coffee, and with the sports pages spread all over the steering wheel. And he thinks it's okay because he has the bluetooth hands-free thingie. My husband isn't much better. She needs a teacher who isn't closing deals while driving....

There's got to be a hands-on/classroom based training program somewhere no?

Subaru Forester. Auto trannie unless you opt to shift. Safe. Hell, I learned on a Ford tractor before I went to high school.

Who's Kenny Chesney? Sorry, clueless about music that doesn't involve evisceration, screaming, cursing, or sex in strange places.
