It is time to submit the sanction request for our first PDX/Time Trial scheduled for April 18-19. I would like to do PDX on Saturday and Club Trials/Track Trials on Sunday. This will give us more track time for the everyone and give the Instructors the ability to focus on their PDX students and not have to try and work on their Club Trials or Track Trials cars between sessions.
There are two major downsides however. First, we will need at least 30 PDX entrants at $175 each to break even financially. Second, we will need Instructors. Time Trials Rules require an instructor to novice student ratio of 1:1 and an intermediate student ratio of 1:2. Advanced students require only 1:4. A proposed event schedule for a PDX is posted. It gives the PDX drivers 1 1/2 hours of seat time. Instructors can run in the first session with the Advanced PDX Drivers and will also have a separate session, the last session of the day, to drive as a group. (or we could combine the instructors with the advanced PDX and let them drive together).
To minimize the first downside financial risk we are negotiating with the Track to try and find ways to reduce costs. The second concern is the number of instructors. I expect we can bring in sufficient instructors to handle a 30-35 car PDX with 10 Novices if we initiate a Reno Region Time Trials Instructor program. The SCCA is working on finalizing a national program but we could issue our own licenses in advance of this. The suggestion is to bring in new inexperienced instructors at an Instructor - Apprentice Grade; drivers that have experience instructing in PDX type events would be licensed at an Instructor - Official Grade; and instructors that are currently licensed as Time Trials Chief Driving Instructors would be issued an Instructor - Specialist Grade license.
Most people I have spoken with are enthusiastic about instructing if they can do it without having to do it and try and prepare for their own Time Trials session at the same time. Their is also some enthusiasm for expanding the instructors beyond the drivers currently driving in competition (Insturctor - Apprentice Grade).
The guestion is will we have enough. Please weigh in and let us know your thoughts and in particular, are you willing to become a Reno Region Time Trials Instructor!!
