On Sunday June 22 I would like to try Autocross.
Is this event open to beginners?
What time do I need to get to Stead Air Force Base? I drive a Subaru Legacy, class HS.
What time can I figure on being done?
How much does it cost?

Thanks Will

Pat covered it. If you are not already aware, we have a very active local Subaru club that meets every Thursday at 7PM at Tamarack Junction and has their own web site/forums at SECCS.org

Many of the members Autocross, do track events, etc.

Come on bye tonight if you want. We are in the back left parking lot until 7:15 or so and then head into the sports bar for food.

Thanks for the warm welcome.

Look like I got the dates wrong but Sat June 28 works for me.

I live in Quincy 70 miles from Reno, so it will not be very convenient for me to make a lot of social events.

Do I need to pack a lunch, or are there venders at the race?

If I bring my wife can we both race the same car the same day?

I'm pretty excited, just picked up the used this Subaru this morning. I took it out on a gravel road and I'm amazed at how it handles. I would have to be going scary fast to brake the tiers loose on pavement. I have done lots of fast dirt driving but this pavement will be really new.

Wow this should be fun,

Will

PS Dean is the Legacy too big to ever really be competative in the HS class? I didn't buy it to race, my wifes old car blew up, but it shouldn't be a bad Autocross ride.

I didn't buy it to race, my wifes old car blew up, but it shouldn't be a bad Autocross ride. While you are learning to drive, within reason, the worse the car is, the better you have to learn to drive. If you show up in a Corvette on race tires for your first event, it will take much longer to learn good driving skills than showing up in a Legacy on All Seasons. The Legacy is no slouch though, so come out and have fun.

As new drivers are seldom competitive and need as much seat time as possible to improve, we created the Novice program that allows you to drive in either or both halves of the day and get that seat time. So, I would recommend running in Novice instead of HS. You and your wife can run together in both the morning and afternoon if you want. Coaches are available to ride with you and you are encouraged to ride with other drivers who are willing.

No vendors on site, so bring a sandwich, or make a quick food run at lunch time.

As others have said, if you want to see how the "other half" lives do come to Reno-Fernley this weekend. Feel free to drop on by the red 42' trailer with the blue #97 and white/green #29 spec racer fords!

Its on the large side, but really its not that bad. It may not be the best, but it'll certainly work and be a very decent car while you are learning.

And like Dean said, it'll be a great starting vehicle.

What year Legacy?

It is a 98 Outback with automatic.

Not the best Subaru for Autocross. It was built to do street and dirt. The tiers are big pneumatic high profile things, perfect for the bumps in off road conditions. The suspension is jacked up to get extra ground clearance, which raises the center of gravity. LOL

Of course this could be all undone with a set of small diameter low profile tiers. It would also lower my gear ratio too, but then I would be out of HS class.

No matter it is plenty good to have some fun Autocrossing with, and I love it on the dirt roads that my mountain town is surrounded with.

As long as your wheels are the same as stock (+/- 5mm of offset and 1/4" of width) you can put any on tires you can get to fit on them in Stock classes.

You're lucky, with all the Subaru guys that attend the solo events you're bound to find a set of wheels/tires for a good price that somebody doesnt need anymore.

Almost anything safe is legal in Novice. If you get into it, then start to think about what modifications/changes you may want to make and their classing implications.

The Novice group was designed for just that reason. It allows the novice to focus on driving and not worry about the minutia of car classing.
