Well, since no Vegas folks are here playing along, how 'bout I turn the conversation a bit to the serious side:

What do people think about a change to the scoring rules for the N/S Challenge? I'm not talking about doing anything this year, or even next necessarily. And I'd want the decision made unanimously by both regions. But I thought it might be cool to make the competition a little different in the future.

Something like: each region nominates their top 10 or 15 drivers, or top 5 drivers from Stock classes, top 5 drivers from SP, top 5 from Modified, etc. And these drivers go head-to-head with their counterparts, and whichever region scores the most heads up wins, wins the event.

Or, something like for every class that both regions have an entrant in, we add up the total times of the fastest driver for each region in each contested class and whichever region has the lowest combined time wins.

Just looking for a way to take PAX, Street Tires (somehow?), and lopsided regional participation out of the mix for the scoring. Anyone that doesn't factor into the results for whatever reason is still there to support their region, drive for fun, and drive for regional points, but is not factored into the N/S Challenge results.

Not sure what people will really think about this sort of idea, but I thought I'd throw it out there just as a "what if".

Maybe we could score it like a high school track meet: Points are awarded from first to third in each event (class); the school (Region) with the most points wins. Of course if we don't have anyone in the 100M dash (AMod) and they do, we're not going to get any points, but if we have a bunch of people in the 400M (ASP) and take all the top positions, then we're good. We could get people to move to different cars or classes depending on what we need to get points, like running ASP instead of SS.

Don loading oddball classes is what vegas does....the results are figured by PAX....I'll le the results gurus explain that "black magic"...I just go to win......and have fun

What's next? An "I Can't Left Foot Brake" or "Three Pedals Confuse Me" handicap?

We'll be fielding a little less than in years past. Economy, Gas prices, blah blah. So it's looking like the only the hard-core Solo-ists will make it this year.

Well, I was really planning on going to Hawthorne this year... even Lisa said she'd come!

But, for about the same cost, I could get 4 hours of track time with a pretty fun group of drivers. I wish Bonnie would scheduling the TEAM event in concert with the Reno SCCA schedule. She complains she loses money at RFR, but that's 'cause half the people that would go are at a Reno points event instead!

I loved my some DS. But, nope, I've now have the STX Subaru Ichiban AutoXttack Double Good Wagon. Same wagon you saw last year, I just changed the wiper fluid and added a new vanilla scented tree to the rearview. Do you know how awesome wagon's are for Solo. All that hauling space for tires and stuff and I can still leave the baby seat in. Do you guys have a "Left Baby Seat In" Special PAX?

200 miles? What you smoking? It's about 650 miles round trip for us. So for me and the wagon that's $99 in gas just to get there and back.

I've found that the difference between Reno and Las Vegas can be accurately summed up by watching an episode of Reno 911 and Vegas back to back.

So, thank god I live in Reno... I mean, who would want all that money, rock music, semi-naked women, and interesting events to take away from time sitting on the porch shooting at empty beer cans?

Anyone who really wants to kick rump roast at Hawthorne should run the Track Trial PDX or Club Trial events at a real race track - RFR; lots of practice getting around fast corners and using the binders and gearbox.

And the Vegans can practice . . . in Sam's Town parking lot????

And the Vegans can practice . . . in Sam's Town parking lot????

Seriously. How great would it be if we could somehow get 3 or 4 major freeways here?! With lots of spagetti-bowl ramps and all kinds of tricky on and off ramps... Maybe throw in a couple of neat canyon roads nearby for good measure. *sigh* - I guess we can dream...

Better yet - Someone should build a $350 million multi-format autosports complex somewhere we can access it. Maybe a major tuner and some race shops would set up there or something. That would be SO COOL. A drag strip, a circle track, a dirt track, a road course - all in one place! Heck, this is Vegas - we could probably get a major NASCAR event and NHRA involved! And of course, there'd be big parking lots for SOLO II in addition to the other stuff! If running there was too expensive, i bet someone could do okay with a quality smaller course somewhere nearby, like Parhump or something. We should look into it!

And if we were REALLY luckym, there'd be an airforce base nearby that would let us use the tarmac from time to time.

Wow. Okay, I'd better wake up now, lol. That's just crazy talk, and dreaming doesn't get things done.

In the meantime, I guess I'll have to be jealous of Reno. After all, they have places you can drive fast and practice, and because of the great climate and low precipitation, they can even use them almost 6 months of the year! I hear slicks are awesome up there too, for like the full 1/3 of the year you can get heat in them! How would it be...

do you guys think the lack of activity in your ST classes is due to you guys having a street tire pax in all classes ? is it going to be used in Hawthorne ?

just wondering, as ST is huge here, and seems to be everywhere else. it's quite the surprise to see the lack of ST in your region.

a possibility if the street tire pax is going to be used, is i can run TCSP in the STS car, if anyone there runs CSP. can also run R compounds, but the car is not really set up for it. ( besides being underprepped for SP )

Yeah - if you run tires with a treadwear rating of 220 or higher, they'll give you an ST PAX on your ST PAX!

Or do they have to be M+S all season rated to qualify? Wait - maybe that's only if the car is normally aspirated AND is on street tires. Or has forced induction and on streets, vs NA and slicks? Or was it just a blanket penalty for FI and slicks?

Maybe you should run the Kart. :p

funny that you should mention that....

according the the Reno 08 sup regs that says:

3.1.1.
Street Tire Eligibility

Drivers competing on street tires (140 tread wear rating or higher) will compete in their appropriate class handicapped by the current street tire handicap multiplier. All classes except Prepared, Modified, and Kart classes are eligible for street tire competition.

no mention of Street Touring classes being excluded there, or anywhere else in the sup regs.

I'm going to borrow the MX-6 and leave the Ion at home, not only does the '6 get better mileage for the trip, but I could kick some butt in TSTX, lol.

I don't know which is more amusing - that it's not mentioned in the regs, or that you (or anyone) did in fact try to exploit it, lol! Don't get me wrong - I would have, too - it's not cheating if it's legal, thatt's always been my take. There's no such thing as a "loophole" in my book - either the rules cover it or they dont, and if they don't, it's not cheating until they do. ;) That said, I play by the rules absolutely where they apply.

The SCCA et al did a great job covering loopholes with thier "if the rules don't specifically allow it, it's not allowed" way of handling things. My hat's off to them for figuring a logical loophole-avoidence technique that many lawmakers in this country - and the IRS - could really benifit from! :P

yes you can run st in ASP, your AO 48's are quite a bit stickier than any ST you will find but are nothing compared to hoosier's or kuhmo's 710's. If you want r- compound try the Hankook Z-214 in the C-71 compound if you have wheels to mount them on. They are very fast and quite a bit cheaper than the above.

To save on gas, next year each region should rent a bus to haul everyone to the event. Then we'll just race the busses.

This is aimed at the Vegans who might be trolling this thread: I'm starting to wonder about attendance this year at the N/S Challenge. I know it's a much longer drive/tow for you guys (about 600 miles round trip??), and what with the price of gas in Tonopah and Hawthorne it might make a body stop and say "Hmmm." So what's the scuttlebut down there about how many are planning on attending? The usual 40-50, more, less????

huh ? gas is expensive ? i diddnt notice. :D

seriously now, i dont know how many people are coming. i know of around 10 people for sure, however i dont know about the rest. since we get around 100 or so people at a local autocross, i would think it's more than 10. but who knows.

IB*****ingaboutpivotcones.

we dont like them either... contrary to what you guys believe, we like the same kind of courses you do. at least from what i remember a long time ago when we ran some Reno events.

we dont like Pivot cones at all, and we dont like skinny sea of cones either... however, it depends on who sets the course up... at recent years N/S you have only seen one persons idea of what a course should be... the rest of us were not allowed to do it.

in my opinion, pivot cones = lack of imagination.

i prefer courses that you would see at national events. but thats me.

but i will say... i will run any course, and have fun on it.

Best/easiest way is to stay at El Capitan with most of the rest of us. That's where registration will be set up on friday evening til about 7:30 or so. I've actually stayed at the Best Western in the past. More expensive, but also a bit nicer and no casino or crowds. This year I'm trying the Cap though.

There's at least one way Las Vegas is faster than Reno -- the folks from Down South are real quick getting their entries in!

It's now one week until the late entry fee (+$10) kicks in, and at that point we also make no promises about shirt sizes, space at the banquet, etc.

As of May 9th, it's Las Vegas 12, Reno 3. If that ratio keeps up, we might as well engrave the N/S trophy now...

you Reno guys ever going to get to the 1990's ? :D

anyway... will get it in the mail tomorrow.

also, there are a lot of LV people on that list that should have a "T" before their classes. they are running classes that allow R compounds, but they are running street tires.

unfortunatly, nobody from Reno is letting us know what the rules are. are you allowing your local options ? if so, it would be really nice to let us know that.

Yes, we are running reno region rules. Anyone in Stock, Street prepared, Street Modified or Street Unlimited can put T in front of their class if they are on 140 or higher treadwear tires to receive an extra 0.975 handicap on both the class and pax times.

Here (http://www.renoscca.org/documents/Solo/2008/2008_solo_supps.pdf) is a link to the local supplementary rules.

Steven Pham LV 84TGS 2008 Honda Civic Si

As far as the "T" factor and other Reno Region quirks -- it's right there on the entry form: "Held under the National SCCA Solo Rules and Reno Region Supplementary Regulations. North-South Challenge scoring by Las Vegas Region SCCA." Reno's supps are available renoscca.org.

Class trophies will be awarded based on Reno's supps, which include the T factor. There is nothing in our supps (or the National rules, for that matter) regarding trophies at regional-level events, so here's what we're doing: Win your class, even if you're the only driver in it, and you get a trophy. We'll also give second and third place trophies, but you'll have to beat somebody to get one of those.

Las Vegas Region will be in charge of the scoring for the N/S Challenge trophy, which I'm assuming will be done like it has in the past: some unfathomable scheme revolving around PAX placings, without the T factor. Reno's scoring guru, Mike Khamis, will have his laptop at peak performance to massage the data however LVR wants it.

Did I miss a meeting where Reno deferred scoring of the N/S challenge to Las Vegas? (I didn't see anything in the minutes for March and April.) If so, someone should have told Mike Khamis, I believe he's written software to score the event already.

Munster? wow, if i take one smell of that i'll certainly go off course. Or DNF in humiliating fashion by going around the triangle in the wrong direction! Oh wait i did that last year ... right.. and with out smelling the munster...

the Boxed wine is a great idea. if its too much ballast you can quickly let some out to adjust. just make sure to match your wine selection with your banquet main course selection. :D

Hey have you Upgraded anything on your car yet? you know that a front sway bar is only around $150 for you car, stock legal , and it improves tire wear :) there's a learning curve, if you go in a lil too hot and understeer you are Forked!! but if you go in slow you can really gas out a lil more aggressively with that swaybar. i have a whiteline 27-29 adjustable, but there's also a strano 32mm hollow bar. Its not too bad of an install either, could even do it in the hotel parking lot with a few wrenches. i think its just a 14 mm, and what ever the sub frame ones are .. (17? 16) plus an allen wrench, if you use vice grips you won't get your end links on very tight and the nuts back off the bolts. i did that last year and had horrible "clunks" coming from them. hey live and learn though.

Hold on? That block of cheese is the only thing that kept me on course last year. To improve my times this year I'm bolting a case of chardonnay to the hatch floor in addition to the cheese. Munster this year, the Brie didn't take to well to the heat last year.

I think Jim means that LV can decide how they want the scoring to count, not actually run the whole scoring and awarding of points. I hope. Both this board and LVSCCA are very confused over this so hopefully Jim has a chance to come back and explain the intent.

first of all... thanks for everyones replies... i think. now im more confused than ever.:D

no big deal. i'll come anyway, and have fun as usual.

just one more question that i just thought of... ( expecting multiple opinions :D ) we are bringing our 5 year old son.

he eats like a bird... in fact, our cats eat more.

i know he would prefer us take him to McDonalds before the banquet to feed him... i swear, they must put addictive kid drugs in that food, i just dont understand why kids like that stuff so much. but we can do that instead of making him eat at the banquet.

do you guys want us to pay for an extra banquet ticket if he is going to be with us ? if so, our options are to lock him in the hotel room... or make him wait outside while we eat... :D

really now. we have no problem paying for him, but can we pay at registration instead of forcing me to write another check ?

hey Rasmus... see what im doing ? causing infighting and controversy in the Reno region ahead of time, so that in a couple of weeks, they will be way too distracted to be able to drive. :D

The hosting region has always done the scoring, why is it different this year? Was this decision made by someone from LV or someone from Reno? Like Scott, I don't remember seeing anything in any of the meeting minutes.

Reno's scoring guru, Mike Khamis, will have his laptop at peak performance to massage the data however LVR wants it.

Wrong. If vegas is going to be massaging data you need to contact whoever it is down there who will be doing the scoring and tell them to bring a USB memory stick to transfer files and their own laptop (or a pencil and calculator), because I am leaving immediately after the event.

Deb, I think the 7th anniversary is either glass, or pizza, or it might be gold - I can never remember. Either way I think you deserve a cold glass of something and a hot pizza!.

Hopefully the 7th anniversary stuff is whatever substance trophies are made of.

Get there early. 7:00am - 7:30am.

Also, if you get into town early enough tonight, we will be having registration at the El Capitan until sometime when it starts to peter out :p

Yeah, there is a building there. But, if its raining, I expect it to be crowded.

Actually Reno is ahead by about a tenth right now.

We've just got a stronger midfield.

Seems we won no matter if the Street Tire handicap was used or not.

All I know is that my shoes may never dry out, it was a ton of work, and I'm very glad no one got hurt, no one went off course badly enough to damage anything, and I think other than the bus we only had one major mechanical over the weekend. So in those regards it was a successful event.

My hats off to you both Jim and Don. The event went well even with all the challenging conditions, out of town, multi regions, poor weather and on and on. Thanks for stepping up and doing a good job.

glad that most were not dissapointed with sundays course. Cal did a great job too... he is not supposed to tell us what to do, but with carefully worded questions to him, we were able to come up with that course that was easily approved by the safety stewards.

not an optimal course, much shorter than i would have liked, but opposed to not being able to run the event at all, it worked out quite nicely.

amazingly enough, it was fun to drive... better than i expected when we were laying it out.

anyway, i had a really good time, and it was great to see you old timers again, and great to meet you other guys for the first time.

for those of you that diddnt go, here is a view from my car... pardon the lack of power and speed, but an STS car is only so fast... had this been a drag race, i would have been one of the first to go home... :o

saturday long course:
saturday run at NS, STS civic

sunday short course:

see ya all next year !

Not a problem, Mark. It was a busy weekend for everyone. Could have used you, though, to humble a certain LV Mazda RX 8 that was nasty fast.
