RENO SCCA MINUTES

JUNE 9, 2004

Dave Deborde called a meeting with the Board of Directors that were present prior to the general meeting at 6:20pm.  He wanted to discuss setting up a separate fund to put monies toward other areas of race within the club and would like to use the $1,000.00 San Francisco Region sent to Reno for their participation in the Double National.  Dave D., Greg B., Matt B., John R., Jr., John R., III, & Dean Benz all agreed this would be a good idea.

Dave called the meeting to order at 6:35pm.  Dave welcomed guests Tony & Patti Settember.

Attendees:  Matt Benson, Greg Benson, Lee Mitchell, Loren Enstad, Mike & Joanne Kapic

John & Patty Evans, Matt Roy Scott Perry, Dean Benz, Debbie Kerswill, Jim Gandy, Tony & Patti Settember, John Riggs, III, John Riggs, Jr., Kyp Johnson, Deb Goins, Chuck Tischler, Lucas Kunze, Heather Money, Mike Mulhal, Larry Capen, Dave & Carol Deborde

Old Business

Winnemucca & North-South Challenge:  John Evans said that Winnemucca was a fun event.  Didn’t like the drag start on the course, but over all it was a good weekend.  Reno won the trophy.

Dave thanked Dean Benz for a great course & well run, excellent event at Hawthorne.  Reno won

2004 Solo I Race Status Report:  Greg reported that Reno has been approved from National to have an event at the Lovelock Airport on July 17 & 18.  Debbie will put it on our Website.

Equipment Status – Flags, Scales, Fire Extinguishers, Bus:  The scales were purchased and  have arrived.  Dave D. has been doing some maintenance on the bus.  Fixed the transmission leak, changed the oil and replaced the starter motor.  He plans to clean the bus & wash it.  He will bring it to Stead for the event on June 12 & 13.  We will need yellow flags for the Solo I event.

Patty said that Don Smith makes flags.  Dave has a source through Bernice Stanley from the NWR & she makes flag sets.  Dave has the price list if we are interested in purchasing them.  Bernice indicated she had made a set of flags for Reno & donated them a few years ago; Mike Kapic thought maybe Craig Cummins might know where they are.  Dean Benz has some yellow flags in his possession that we may borrow for this event & see how it goes before we purchase some.  Everyone present agreed that would be a good idea.

Fire Extinguishers are also needed for the Solo I.  Would like to rent them for this event if anyone knows of some place to do that.  Greg will call rental business’ to see if they have any.  We will also need an emergency vehicle with extinguishers on it.  Loren Enstad will look into them too.

John Evans suggested that we set up a separate account to purchase these items.

Dave informed the club that SFR gave us $1,000.00 for our participation in the Double National and said he’d had a brief meeting with the BoD before the meeting discussing this very idea.  The BoD agreed to have a separate fund set up through our account.

A motion made by Dean Benz that we open a separate fund using the $1,000.00 to get us started for other race programs other than Solo II.  John Riggs, Jr. 2nd.  Discussion.  Motion Carried.

Dave would like to put together a committee to explore different avenues for race programs. Greg Benson, chairperson; volunteered: Matt Benson, Larry Capen, Lee Mitchell, & Mike Kapic.  We will put an article together for the Wheel (SFR) to see if there are any racers interested in helping.

Reno-Fernley Status:  Jim Gandy reported that NASA had a race last weekend at Fernley and he went out to see how it went.  Jim feels that Rich Gable has addressed most of the previous complaints and the 2.4 mile track looked like it was ready for us to get serious about scheduling an event.  The Nevada Highway Patrol is having a school on 6/15-17.  The Subaru Club is having a driver school on 8/26 for $200.00 open to anyone interested – contact Matt Roy or Scott Perry.  Jim has a fees sheet, rules, application forms, etc & passed around for viewing and gave to Greg.  Dean will put a link on our website to Reno-Fernley’s schedule if it’s possible.  Lee Mitchell was also there crewing for a driver and agrees that the course looks much better.  Jim suggested we look into the possibility of a group going out to see what we could do to help the track.

Dave said he would like to see the newly formed committee look into this and other ideas and get back to us with a report at our next meeting.

Timing/Registration System & Procedures:  Scott wrote some software to get quicker results.  Dean reported that we have a newer computer that will be more stable.

Solo 2 Divisional Update:  The event will be 6/26-27.  The Stewards & Chiefs are in place.  We will add street tire class but they won’t be running for Divisional points – they will be open to win a trophy.  Debbie will add the class on MyAutoEvents.com.  Thank you Scott for awesome design for trophies & T-shirts and Matt for ordering the T-shirts.  Thanks to John R., III & Carol Sheets helped to secure Little Waldorf for a Sat. night social.  John will make a map to pass out at the event.  Bleachers have been requested and Carol D. will follow up to see that they are available.

Event #8 & #9:  John Evens is event chair & will be setting up the course Fri. am.  Help needed.

Incident @ North-South Challenge – Update:  A guest from San Diego was working a corner and was seriously hurt.  He is in good spirits and doing well. He will be in therapy for about 2 months.  A reminder that this is a dangerous sport – no matter how much you stress safety.  A collection was taken at the event and the injured party was very touched with the generosity of both clubs and its members.  They wish to Thank us for all of the support they have received.

NWR National/Double Regional/Vintage/Solo I Event:  Jim Gandy & Lee Mitchell attended the event.  Jim did a mock interview of Lee – Lee said “it was a dream come true for him to race his 240Z Datsun in the Vintage & Solo I”.  Both had a great time & we congratulation them both.  See write up in this Newsletter.

Reno Boat & RV Show:  The show is 2/10-13, 2005.  It is expensive to have a space & was suggested we not do it this year.

Newsletter:  Dave thanked Jim Gandy for the superb job he did on the Newsletter for the past 1 1/2 years.  It is with our deep regret that Jim has given his resignation.  HELP – if you ever wanted to write, here is your opportunity!  Greg Benson is putting together the June newsletter – any help would be appreciated.  Patty will get the labels out Monday & a list of the new members for the newsletter.

Walk on Items:

SECCS is having a Driver School & Track time at Reno-Fernley Aug 29 for $200.00 – T-shirt & lunch are included.

Dave reminded the club that we had voted to give SECCS the $750.00 that was received at the Convention for our retention of Subaru Members.  Was suggested they may want to donate it to the Race fund just approved.

John Riggs, Jr. said he will be having the annual camp out on 6/18 & 19.  Call John for more info.

Matt Roy reported that Doug Driver invited the SECCS to attend the charity event the Rotary Club put on two weeks ago. Had lots of fun and they won for most drivers participating.

Decision to order lime green vests for Safety Stewards.  Mike Mulhall will get them for us.

Jim Gandy will not be able to do the July Driver School.  We are looking for an event chair.

Dean Benz moved we adjourned, Mike Kapic 2nd.  Meeting adjourned at 8:15pm

Respectfully submitted by:  Carol Deborde, Secretary
